Hungerford Algebra, Springer Science+Business LLC, New York.
During the course of 611-612 we plan to cover most of the topics listed in the Abstract Algebra portion of the material covered in the Ph.D. comprehensive examination in Algebra, as listed in the handout entitled "Graduate Mathematics at the University of Hawaii".

Tests, Homework, and Grades

Mid Term Test: approximately March 6.
The Final Exam: It is comprehensive and on on Tuesday, May 13, 2008 from 9:45 - 11:45AM in Keller 413.

Makeup exams: Makeup exams will not be given unless the absence is due to verifiable circumstances beyond the student's control.

Attendance: you are expected to be in class each day, and you are required to be present at each test and examination. Poor attendance may affect your grade.

Notes: You are expected to take notes in class. We may cover some material in class that is not in the book. We may sometimes present the material in class in a different way than is in the book. You are responsible for the material presented in class as well as the material in the text.

Clarity of thought and coherent expression of that thought should be your goal. Precision and logical correctness are required. Spare elegance is highly prized in mathematical exposition. Long, muddy essays are discouraged.

Grading Policy

Your homework will be a 38% of your grade. Your homework will be writing original proofs.

Assignments more than a week late will not be acccepted, and late assignments will have points deducted for tardiness.

The mid term will count as 25% of your grade, and the final will count as 37% of your grade.

Good attendance and a record of improving scores may positively affect the grades of people in borderline situations.
