Reading Assignment: Today (Thursday x-hour) we discussed generalities about 2nd order, linear IVP's and began discussing the method of the characteristic polynomial. Since no one read the assignment, read it now (reading part of Homework 6). Tomorrow (Friday) we will continue with the method of the characteristic polynomial; to prepare read 3.4 and 3.5. When reading pay attention to: More details on the Method of the Characteristic Polynomial: 1) what do you do if the characteristic polynomial has complex roots? 2) what do you do if it has a single repeated root? A little geometry of solutions, especially in the case of complex roots of the characteristic polynomial. Problems: Section 3.1 : 1,5,10,12,16,17,21,30 Remark : #30 will be revisited briefly when we discuss Chapter 7
