Academic Expectations

The prerequisites for this course are grades of "D" or better in Math 244 or 253A, and 311, or consent from the instructor. Students should review the Statement of Academic Expectations. All academic work should be done with the high levels of honesty, integrity and excellence that this University demands.

Readings

We will cover chapters 1, 2, 3, and parts of chapters 5 and 6 from the text book.

To facilitate calculations, we will incorporate the use of a Computer Algebra System. You are free to use your favorite CAS. Two that are available in the Math Department's Computer Lab are Maple and Mathematica, and I can provide an account for anyone who wants to use the Lab. Maple, Mathematica and the Open Source alternative Maxima are well suited to our course. The text book uses Maple and includes Maple code that you can immediately incorporate into your assignments, which should make Maple slightly easier to use in our class. Maxima is free, and student pricing is available for Maple and Mathematica should you choose to purchase a personal CAS.

Attendance and Grading

Regular attendance to class lectures is required. The grade will be determined by two in-class midterm exams, a cumulative final exam, and homework. Homework assignments and due dates will be posted on the MATH 443 Homework page. Homework assignments must be legible, and you are required to use proper grammatical English and follow the guidelines for clear and concise writing. The exams and homework will be weighted as follows:

Homework 20% Grade computed from the weekly assignments
Exam 1 20% Thursday, February 28
Exam 2 20% Thursday, April 17
Final 40% Thursday, May 15, 12:00PM to 2:00PM.

You must bring your UH student ID to every test. If Keller Hall is closed for any reason, we will meet by the steps of Hamilton Library. Only documented valid health related excuses will be accepted for missing an exam.
