This course is a supplement
to "Math 100: A Survey of Mathematics" which is taught at the
University of Hawai'i. While the title implies that only honors
students are admitted, this is hardly the case. Any student who
wants to explore mathematics at a deeper level than is presented in
their 3 credit lecture class is admitted. This makes the class
into a 4 credit honors course. Honors students are given credit
towards their hornors degree whereas regular students just get an
unusual experience.
I was lucky enough to draw the assignment of teaching this class during
its premiere and was therefore able to have some input into its
developement. I also taught the class the following semester with a
different focus. However both classes were taught with the same
pedagogical theme. We wanted to develop a students ability and
confidence in problem solving by having them actively participate in
solving open ended math problems. In this sense, the class was run much
in the same way that a humanities class might run. There was much
discussion and sharing of ideas. Homework assignments did not ask
definitive questions. Students were given free reign to develop
and answer questions of their own interest.
The classes were very successful and, I believe, well-liked by the
students. On the right, I have included some of the topics we
covered.
