Math 251A-2, Accelerated Calculus I

General Expectations
The Department of Mathematics has a general expectations statement, which we are assumed to follow in this class.
Reading
In this class we use the book
  • James Stewart Calculus: Early Vectors, Brooks/Cole Publishing Company
    The book is really unavoidable, and cannot be replaced with another calculus textbook!
    Course Objective
    To learn basic concepts, techniques and applications of differential and integral calculus.
    Prerequisites
    A grade of A in Math 140 or Math 215, or assessment exam as specified by the department and consent.
    Computer Lab
    The class holds at Physical Science, 208 on Mondays, 1:30-2:20. Matthew Chasse runs the lab.
    Grading Policy
    The course contains a combination of concepts, ideas and techniques. To understand the material means to be able to apply it in solving problems. At the end of the day, your grade will reflect your ability to solve specific differential and integral calculus problems. Since this is an honors class, these solutions may involve some mathematical proofs. More specifically, the following rules are to be taken.

  • In order to be qualified for a grade of C or better one must pass the departmental Gateway Exam .

  • Final exam will take place on Wednesday, December 13, 12:00 - 2:00 and count for 40% of the final grade. The exam is cumulative (it covers all the material).


  • Departmental Gateway Exam, which covers primarily the techniques of differentiation counts for 10% of the final grade.
  • Mid-term test, which covers the material of Chapters 2,3 and 5 from the book counts for 25% of the final grade. The date of the midterm will be announced a week in advanced in class.

  • Quizzes will be given almost weekly, and the average grade for the quizzes counts for 25% of the final grade.
