Course Description for Math 100 - Fall 2004General Expectations: The Math Department's general expectations of students. Text: The text for this course is Mathematical Excursions by Aufmann, et al. We will cover Chapters 1, 2, 3, 4, 7, 9, 11,and 12. Midterms and Final and Homework: There will be 3 midterms and a final. The midterms are each worth 25 and the final is worth 30. The homework is also worth 25. Your homework grade will replace the lowest of the three exams, provided it is higher. So there is a total of 105 points possible. The Final will be comprehensive, and will be on Tuesday, Dec 14 from 4:30 to 6:30.
You must bring your UH student ID to every test. If Bilger is
closed for any reason, we will meet on the steps at Hamilton Library.
Only documented
valid health related excuses will be accepted
for missing an exam. Homework: You do your homework online. In addition to the assigned problems students are expected to do an appropriate amount of "drill and practice" on their own in order to become proficient with the concepts and techniques introduced in class. The odd numbered problems generally have answers in the back of the book. The book's website also has practice problems. A Note on Etiquette
Large classes present special problems for students and
instructor alike. For instance, in a class of approximately 300
students noise from talking, eating, and reading newspapers can be very
distracting. As a courtesy to everyone, I ask that activities such as
these be kept to an absolute minimum. If we all work together we can
make this a very pleasant learning environment.
Cell phones and beepers must be turned off during class.
