Course Description for Math 216 - Fall 2004General Expectations: The Math Department's general expectations of students. Goal: To understand the concepts of calculus and know how to use them to solve practical problems. The definitions and theorems are important to understanding how to apply calculus to real life situations. Text: The text for this course is Calculus for the Life Sciences by Greenwell, et. al., Addison Wesley. Course Description: Calculus of several variables. We will cover parts of Chapters 7 and 8 and then Chapters 9, 10, and 11 in the text. Midterms and Final: Course grades will be based on homework, two midterms, and a final. The Final will be comprehensive, and will be on Tuesday, Dec 14 from 12 to 2. Homework: Homework will be a combination of online and written work. In addition to the assigned problems students are expected to do an appropriate amount of "drill and practice" on their own in order to become proficient with the concepts and techniques introduced in class. The odd numbered problems generally have answers in the back of the book. If you are unable to understand how the book got its answer, it is your responsibility to find out: see the instructor or TA in his office, or visit the tutor room (PSB 315) for assistance or work with your fellow students. For the homework to be turned in, it is acceptable to work together, but each person should independently write up his/her own work. |
