General Notes:

The Universities of Illinois. Wisconsin, Oregon, and Michigan were chosen arbitrarily from the usual list of "Peer and Benchmark" institutions to UH, and are included for comparison purposes only. There is no assertion that they are in any way representative of the other schools on that list.
Peer institutions (the ones above, and most others we have looked at) generally do not separate the "foundational" and "diversification" components of the general education requirements (as we do) when listing credit requirements. However, in some cases the natural course for meeting a foundational requirement might not be accepted for the diversification component.
These totals do not include language requirements, which all the schools have to greater or lesser degree.
Because some requirements can be met in more than one area, these numbers are approximate. For example, the UH foundational requirement in Symbolic Reasoning can be met by courses in Math, Philosophy, and AREC, so one credit hour from this requirement was assigned to each of the three columns.
