Students gather for a brief discussion about water and the ocean. We discuss movement in the water versus movement on the land and in the air. We discuss the different animals which inhabit these different environments. Students are encouraged to discuss and share their experiences with the ocean.
We present a movie containing clips from Finding Nemo (2001), 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1954), Diving Poipu, and ODIN In Action. We immediately catch the students’ interest with Finding Nemo, and we use that to make a smooth transition into the science we would like to teach them. In order to discuss and emphasize ocean principles presented in the film, we pause the movie at certain points. These principles include buoyancy, gravity, viscosity, and the types of underwater vehicles. We use a poster to act as a visual aid to convey these ideas and concepts.
